Songwriting Piano Lab

Ages 12+

Prerequisites: two years prior private instrument instruction, basic understanding of keyboard

Wednesdays 6:30-8pm @ 1909 W Byron St

We will break down the essentials of songwriting in this 8-week session. If you are a student with at least two years of private instruction on your instrument, have a fundamental understanding of the piano, and are looking to branch out into writing your own original music; then this lab is perfect for you! Each week, students will focus on a different aspect of songwriting from learning what makes a catchy melody to learning the harmonic and rhythmic possibilities that help to bring it to life. Reinforced with listening and examples from popular music, students will leave this course with a deeper understanding of song structures and many new tools to help them continue developing their writing skills. By the end of the course, students will showcase their newly written music in a welcoming, collaborative environment.
