Mimy Leland

Mimy (she/her) possesses a coloratura soprano with a sparkling upper extension and gorgeous floating high notes. She is a natural performer with superb acting skills. Mimy recently made her debut as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the Hartt School of Music in Connecticut, where she is finishing her Artist Diploma in Opera Studies. A native of China, she completed her Undergraduate Studies in Music Education in China and Russia, followed by a Master's degree at The Hartt School. Although her current passion is opera and art song, Mimy’s musical journey began with piano lessons at age five and percussion at age 12. This early start in music education, combined with her dedication to teaching, makes her a great teacher, passionate about sharing her knowledge and love for music with others.

During her undergraduate studies, Mimy studied classical vocal music, music education, choral singing, and conducting under the noted Russian artists Oksana Melnikova and Magomed Musaev. She currently works with Deborah Lifton at the Hartt School, Tomoko Nakayama (Yale School of Music), and Lynn Kao, who has conducted in opera houses across Germany.

Before coming to the United States, Mimy was invited by CCTV (China Central Television) to record programs in Beijing, China. In addition, she has performed in concerts and recitals in Moscow, Russia, and Osaka, Japan. Because of her exposure to Western and Eastern traditions of music, she has a breadth of knowledge of vocal music in many styles that are rare and unique.

Mimy has nurtured her love for music education by expanding her courses to include Educational Psychology, Children's Music Pedagogy, and Vocal Pedagogy. This commitment to holistic musical development extends from her master's degree, where she explored the topic of "The Benefits of Early Childhood Music Education in Character Development" through a dedicated research paper. Mimy's passion for young minds blossomed further during her undergraduate program, where she served as a teaching assistant and captivated students with her engaging approach. Having taught young kids for over 8 years now, Mimy possesses a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of their unique needs and learning styles. Filled with excitement, she embarks on her career as a performer and pedagogue, eager to share the transformative power of music and its positive impact on young lives!
